Highlights and Things to See on Usedom Island

Royal Seaside Resort Ahlbeck
Usedom
The seaside spa town of Ahlbeck is one of the three recognized royal spas on the island of Usedom and lies directly on the border with Poland. Many classic seaside buildings line the Dünen Street along the coast and many other streets of the city, such as Bismarck Street. In 1899 one of the landmarks of the town, the Guest Pavillion, was erected on the 280 meter long sea pier; directly in front is the Jugend style clock from 1911, it was a gift to the spa town from one of the guests in the area. Ahlbeck has been a popular seaside destination since the 50s and you can get a great view of the town from the 60 meter tall Zirowberg.
Royal Seaside Resort Heringsdorf
Usedom
This town, once a fishing village in the early 1800s, got its name from Prussian Crown Prince Friederich Wilhem in 1820 and five years later the sea bathing craze began. The longest sea pier in Europe, with 508 meters, is here in Heringsdorf; the Seashell Museum with its private collection of interesting gifts from nature is also located on the pier. You can also explore the various exhibits on minerals, insects, shells, fossils and the 120 million year old Dinosaur nest with 8 fossilized eggs. Another highlight is the Amethyst ceilinged caves.
Royal Seaside Resort Bansin
Usedom
Bansin is the smallest and youngest of the three royal baths and in order to set itself apart it opened the first open air swimming pool on the island. The beach promenade allows for a perfect view of the sea anywhere you go along its course. Lovely houses from the 18th and 19th Centuries line the Berg Street and in the middle of town is an exhibition of exotic animals and plants in the Tropenhaus.
Peenemünde - Historical Technical Museum
Usedom
Peenemünde was the high command for technical experimental advancement from 1936 to 1945. The first rocket in the world was launched from here in October 1942. The adjoining test grounds for the German Air Force saw the creation and tests of some of the world’s most astounding flight instruments; all with military intentions. Supported by slave labor from the concentration camp prisoners, many of the creations here were put quickly into production, for example the rocket that Goebbels cynically called “"Vergeltungswaffe 2" or in English… The Reprisal Weapon 2. The creation of these terribly inhumane weapons resulted in the loss of thousands of lives in Belgium, England, and France. Ambivalence for the use of these modern weapons of warfare and technology was rife in Peenemünde. Today, the museum that was created to show these advancements is the largest monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is open to the public. Since this building was converted from a place of war to a place of peace, science and understanding it received a Cross of Peace from Coventry.. the so called Nagelkreuz.
