Highlights and Things to See in Lübeck

Boat Trip Around the City
Lübeck
Your city tour could begin with a boat trip on the Trave River around Lübeck; you’ll travel past the historic old city, sailing ships, Devil’s Island, the Witch’s Plaza, and Artists center, and the towers of Lübecks cathedral and churches and under the elevator bridge. Be sure to count the 7 towers of Lübeck!
Holstentor
Lübeck
The famous Holsten Gate of Lübeck, today one of the landmarks of the city, is one of the remaining city gates that was part of the city’s defense walls. The late Gothic tower, is next to the city’s oldest gate, the Burg Gate, and houses a museum. An exhibition titled The Power of the Traders is the story of Lübeck and centers on the Hanseatic times, ship building, and the historical Holstenstores and their armaments and protections from fines to torture! There is also a model of the city in the year 1650.
St Mary’s Cathedral of Lübeck
Lübeck
St Mary’s is the third largest church in Germany and has the tallest Gothic nave in the world. She is a major work of art and served as the model for many future Gothic churches which were built all over the Baltic region. During WWII the church was burned and damaged from bomb attacks and almost completely destroyed: its towers fells as well as the bells. Reconstruction began as early as 1947 and the towers were once again standing tall in 1956 and 1957. The destroyed and half melted original bells remain on the southern tower floor.
Stadtrundgang
Lübeck
There are many small and large stores,in the restored shopping houses and they offer aboard variety of wares and goods. Several small boutiques also beckon shoppers to explore. Folks on the search for old Hanseatic buildings might want to wonder into an old restaurant and down into the cellars.
